about james prochnik

I'm an artist, photographer, designer, and writer currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY.

I grew up in Northern Virginia. A few miles west was small town and rural Virginia. A few miles east was Washington, D.C. I enjoyed and came to love the particular characteristics and experiences that grew from each of these environments. I still value the unique perspectives and access available to those who keep a stake in two different worlds.

My higher education includes a BS in Communications from Boston University (I never decided if my degree is absurdly or appropriately named), a stint at RISD, several years study at the Art Students League, and classes in art and design all over the city. I view education as a lifetime and ongoing process, and one of the most meaningful aspects to my life. Recently, these educational goals have been on augmenting my skills in xhtml, css, and web design with a particular focus on WordPress.

Most of my career was spent running a busy and productive fine art studio in TriBeCa where I assembled and managed ad hoc teams of artists that designed and fabricated unique 2D and 3D artworks and art installations for clients such as Disney Imagineers, Ian Schrager, Canyon Ranch, and David Rockwell. My day to day work ran the gamut from writing proposals, initiating project designs and concept development to project management, art direction, and account management.

In my personal work, my photography has been licensed by Photonica (now part of Getty Images), published in Fortune Magazine, and used as book covers and illustrations for a variety of clients including Microsoft. I've also had graphic design work featured in Time Magazine.

You can view my complete portfolio of mixed media and assemblage sculptural works here: objectpoem.com.

You can also find me snapping pictures and uploading scans from my vintage magazine collection over at flickr, posting the occasional video to my vimeo page, promoting my art and activities on my facebook fan page, and tumbling through some of the most unique and beautiful images on the web inside my plastic tumblr.

Currently, when I'm not working on Plasticarmy or it's various distant outposts, I work for Artcentered Media where I help creative professionals and busy small businesses market and communicate their services, achievements, and stories through imaginative web design, blogging, and social media outreach.

More of my online activities summarized here.
